YAEC Letter to USAEC dated 1/20/75 Cear Sir:

Feference (b) requested that we conduct an investigation at the,

~*

Yankee Fowe plant to determine if the failure of any non-Category I' equiprent could result in flooding or the release of chemicals that' cculd jeopardice safe shutdown of the facility. The results of this invcstigation are outlined in Reference (c).

The details of the pernanent modifications that will be implemented are as follows:

1.

Irimary Auxiliary Euildino

. \\

Ob Sufficient cpenings will be provided in the Primary Auxiliary '

3../.4 Euilding (PAB) to prevent the flooding of Motor Control Center 4. T h, m8 These openings will be prcvided at ground level to allow for the egress of water from a postulated rupture of service water f

j piping. An cpening will be made at the bottom of the double i

decr in the north wall. The dimensions of this opening will be 5'-C" wide by l'-0" high. Additional exit paths will be provided at ground level along the north wall.

These will censist of three l'-0" by l'-0" openings. The spacing of these k

heles will be determined by equipment locations along the wall.

Leuvers will be installed in the openings.

2.

Redundant Alarms To alert the Control Room operators of increasing water level in the PAB, redundant switches will be installed in the floor These float switches will activate an alarm in the Rad su p.

Waste Building and also in the Control Room if a high water level in the sump is detected by either of the switches.

3.

Diesel Generator Building The interconnecting door between the PAB and the Diesel Generator Building will be remounted and gasketed to prevent water leakage from impairing the operability of the 480V.switchgear comprising Emergency Buses 1, 2 and 3.

In addition, the door will be equipped with a closure switch that will activate an alarm in the Rad Waste Building and the Control Room if the door is left open longer than 30 seconds.

4.

Implementation Schedule Implementation of these modifications will-be accomplished as soon as possible and the completion date will be no later than June 1, 1975.

We trust the above information is responsive to your letter; however, should you desire additional information feel free to contact us.
