Dear Mr. Engelken:

Subject:

WPPSS MUCLEAR PROJECT NOS. 3 AND 5 RESP 0"SE TO IE BULLETIN 79-24 Ref: (1) Telecon, G. C. Sorensen (WPPSS) and T. Bishop (NRC Reg V),

October 5,1979.

(2)

Telecon, K. A. Hadley (WPPSS) and T. Bishop (NRC Reg. V),

September 5, 1980.

The subject bulletin, " Frozen Lines," was forwarded to the Supply System for information on september 27, 1979.

Reference (1) confirmed that no action was required by UPPSS at that time.

This letter is in response to referer.ce (2) which requested that we now reply to the bulletin.

We have reviewed the designs of our nuclear projects numbers 3 and 5 for safety-related process, instrument, and sampling lines which might require freeze protection during extremely cold weather.

Our category IE design specifications concerning electric freeze protection and temperature maintenance systems imposes sufficient criteria to ensure that thermal alarm sensors are (1) located to monitor the anticipated worst case condition and (2) calibrated to indicate within +?/-00F of the actual fluid temperature.

Very truly yours, D. L. Renberger Assistant Director, Technology bk cc: Of fice of ISE, Division of RCI--Washington, D.C.
