Dear Mr. Thornburg:

Subject:

WPPSS NUCLEAR PROJECT NOS. 3 AND 5

' RESPONSE TO IE BULLETIN 80-09

-Ref:-

Letter, ser. G03-80-1521, D. L.

Renberger(WPPSS) to H. D.-Thornburg (NRC), same subject. -dated June 25, 1980.

1 The referenced letter forwarded the' Supply System's initial response to IE Bulletin 80-09, "Hydramotor Actuator Deficiencies." In that letter, we indicated that the two contractors who supplied.the subject ITT General Control (ITT GC) actuator models, Valtek Inc. and American l Warming'and Ventilating Company. had been requested to review and re-

- evaluate the actuator designs and to. report any corrective actions

- being taken by August-31,1980. This~1etter is intended to provide Lyou'with an update-of the status of vendor responses to our requests.

v American Warming and Ventilating Company (AWV) it supplying twenty-5 eight ITT-GC actuators with a No. I spring for usc in a damper actuating e

applibation.- As mentioned in the subject Bulletin, ITT-GC is currently N,;

4 performing actuator testing to ' determine their minimum capabilities.

AWV will' compare each damper torque requirement against the ~ITT-GC F Jtests'. statistical minimum output data, which will include a penalty

for. the maximum lossyin spring-output;due to the use of 1060-1070 steel springs.. If the: actuators-cannot be shown to develop sufficient thrust to meet theidamper torque requirements, they will be returned to ITT-GC-for any necessary modifications.
