i The North Anna Unit 1 Fire Protection Safety Analysis Report dated February, 1979 stated our requirement to install the smoke detector system on Unit 1 by j_

- the second refueling outage. Vepco letter serial no. 655 dated July 25, 1980-3 stated our commitment to install the smoke detection system in Unit 2 areas of the Station during the outage which is presently scheduled to begin on November 1,-1990.

The purpose of this letter is to clarify one aspect of this commitment.

I The smoke detection system consists of 45 new zones of smoke detectors.

Approximately 12 zones will be located in strictly Unit 2 areas,12 zones

will be in strictly Unit 1 areas, and the balance will be in areas _ common to Units 1 and 2.

We are currently installing smoke detection in areas common to Units 1 and 2 and accessible areas prior to the Unit 2 outage.

The intent of our commitment is.that all-12 zones in strictly Unit 2 areas will be made operational during the November 1st outage. All 12 zones in Unit 1 areas and all 23 zones in the common areas will be made operational as soon thereaf ter as possible, with all 45 zones operational by the end of j

Unit l's next refueling' outage presently scheduled for January 1, 1981.
