RDSilver, L:0EB #2 GErtter,DRA (#5400) We have reviewed your letter dated March 7, 1973, to Chairman Ray and had previously reviewed the report of Dr. Taivoglou to which you referred. Our evaluation of radioactive effluent releases at the operating Commonwealth Edison nuclear power stations has been and is being performed on a continuing basis. Since promulgation of the changes to Parts 20 and 50, Title 10 of the Jode of Federal Regulations, which clarified the intent that effluent releases be maintained as low as practicable, we have init.'.ted evaluations of off-gas

reatment at each of the Co=mor.eca).t. Edison stations. The first Commonwealth Edison operating station for which a review was co=pleted was Quad-Cities Units 1 and 2.

By letter of Fcbruary 16, 1973, to Co=mo= wealth Edison, we co scluded that the off-gas treatment system presently being installed at the Quad-Cities Station is acceptabic. A similar review is nearing completion for the Dresden Units 2 and 3. We are now concentrating our attention on the Dresden Unit 1 which is the smallest of the five Commonwealth Edison operating units. The review of the Dresden Unit 1 radio-active waste system will be accomplished to assure that effluent releases will be at a level which is as low as practicable within j the purview of the Commission's current guidelines on such releases.
