Attention:
Mr. B. J. Youngblood, Chief Licensing Projects Branch No. 1
Dear Mr. Denton:
Mr. R. L. Tedesco's letter of July 31, 1980 stated the NRC position relative to the McGuire Nuclear Station in-core thermocouples. This position is as follows:
We require that the McGuire in-core thermocouple readout have the following capability:
l' l.
Ability for complete thermocouple mapping printout within l
5-6 minutes or less; l
2.
Readout and printout capability should exist above 700 l
degrees Fahrenheit (thermocouples are capable of measuring in the 2000 degree Fahrenheit range).
The McGuire Operator Aid Computer (OAC) reads each of the sixty-five in-core thermocouples six times each minute. These six readings are averaged to generate a one-minute average value of each in-core thermocouple.
A map of these in-core thermocouple values can be displayed on the control room CRT, and printout can be available within five minutes. Each in-core thermocouple 2
value used in the map is updated every ten minutes. Thus, every ten minutes a new one-minute average value of each in-core thermocouple is available for mapping.
1 In addition, a separate OAC program can pr. vide the operator with a tabular print-I out of any one-minute average value of each thermocouple. This printout can be 90 9 A

-Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director September. 17,.1980 Page Two available in less than five minutes. As_soon as one printout is complete the program can provide a printout of a subsequent one-minute average value of each thermocouple.
Maximum in-core thermocouple values (23000F) can be displayed on the CRT or on a printout.
Ve truly yours,
