Dear tir. Denton:
NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT 1
. SECONDARY CHEMISTRY PROGRAM UPDATE Our letter of December 10, 1979, Serial No. 1003, provided the results of the North Anna Unit 1 first refueling outage steam generator inspection and plugging effort.
We also provided at that time Westinghouse recommended operating Chemistry Specifications (Table 1, Appendix D), which were included in the Boric Acid Treatment Program description. Additionally, our letters of June 18, 1980, and June 30, 1980, Serial Nos. 543, and 352, respectively, forwarded additional information about the observed steam generator corrosion at North Anna 1.
Our December 10, 1979, letter stated that secondary chemistry would be maintained less than or equal to 1.0 pmho/cm cation conductivity at 25*C.
This is considerably more stringent than the Westinghouse recommended value of less than 2.0 umhos/cm, and, while attempting to maintain the lower limit was desirable, it has proved infeasible.
In light of this, we are now main-taining secondary chemistry in compliance with the Westinghouse AVT Chemi;try guidelines which limit cation conductivity to less than 2 pahos/cm during full power operation.
We noted that the Powdex anits would be used in the bypass or filter mode until an evaluation concerning their continued use/ modification had been completed.
Our evaluation is continuing and until such time as it is completed, we will continue to operate the Unit 1 Powdex units in the bypass mode.
If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact this office.
Very truly yours, B. R. Sylvia anager - Nuclear Operations and t!aintenance cc: tir. James P. O'Reilly i
