,,, twh-s-August 6, 1980 The Hon. John F. Ahearne U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555
Dear Chairman Ahearne:
I believe that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission along with other governmental regulatory agencies are being unfair to the General Public Utilities Corporation, their stockholders, customers, and the general public by refusing to allow Unit 1, undamaged nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island to go on line. Such action can only trigger a shortage of low cost energy, a raise in cost, and is inflationary.
It.does not make sense to call upon customers to save energy, and at the same time, forbid suppliers, through bureaucratic red tape, from operating safe nuclear plants such as Unit 1 at Three Pale Island, which should be in use.
Recognizing that nuclear energy is necessary to solving our energy problems, I believe that regulatory commissions are largely responsible for its non-use.
A few months ago, an electric supplier of the Northwest
/ '
served notice that it was giving up on its nuclear plant projects because of opposition by governmental bureaucracy and environmental minorities.
Now, the company is getting fat rate increases, an.1 i
everybody pays!
l Will you please help relieve the pressure on this company so that Three Mile Island Unit 1, undamaged reactor can be speedily returned to service?
l Very sincerely, C. P. Francis l
