August 29, 1980 Dockets Hos. 50-282 and 50-306-4 Mr. L. O. Mayer, Manager Nuclear Support Services Northern States Power Company 414 Nicollet Mall - 8th Floor Minneapolis, P.innesota 55401

Dear Mr. Mayer:

1

SUBJECT:

Environmental Qualification of Electrical Equipment 4

This letter transmits an Order which requires information to support the environmental qualification of safety related electrical equipment at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Unit Nos.1 and 2.

The Commission's Memorandum and Order of May 23, 1980 addresses safety related electrical equipment exposed to a harsh environment, inside or outside containment, resulting from an accident.

The Order requires that all such equipment in operating reactors be fully qualified by June 30,1982.

To complete this objective, you are required to submit, by November 1, 1980, all information to support a safety evaluation of the aforemen-tioned equipment.

If your facilities had an established commitment date before November 1,1980, it is fully expected that your submittal will be not later than that comitment date.

If your facilities' commitment date is past without a complete submittal, it is strongly recomended that actions be expedited since they have already impacted the staff review schedule.

Briefings were held with all interested licensees during the week of July 17,1980. Enforcement actions relative to this Order were dis-cussed during these briefings.

Sincerely, k].-

s Robert A.' D h.
