NUCLEAR r.EGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 1 %/J July 31, 1980 gv..../

Docket No. 50-309 Mr. Robert H. Groce Senior Engineer-Licensing Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company 25 Research Drive Westboro, Massachusetts 01581

Dear Mr. Groce:

The enclosed Safety Evaluation has been issued by the Commission to do::ument our review of your feedwater piping systems inspections per-formed in response to our I&E Bulletin 79-13 at Maine Yankee Atomic Power Plant. Our I&E inspections have verified that your staff per-formed the inspections required by the Bulletin and found no cracking or other anomalies in the feedwater piping.

We find that the non-destructive and visual inspections performed by your staff and the inherent toughness of the piping materials are adequate to ensure that the feedwater piping integrity will be main-tained.

Sincerely,

{ h h Gr ohdrt Clark, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #3 Division of Licensing
