IE Bulletin No. 79 Low-Level Padioactive Waste Shipments In reply to IL Bulletin No. 79-19, the followi g infonnation is submitted for licenses @>113, 5-1399-8 SNM 111, and SME 237.
Items 1 and 2: A current set of D0T and NRC regulations concerning the transfer, packaging, and transport of low-level radioactive waste material, as well as appropriate requirements from the contractor, are maintained by the Geological Survey.
Item 3:
The responsibility for the safe transfer, packaging, and transport of low-level radioactive material has been assigned to the TRIGA Reactor Facility. The Reactor Health Physicist is the individual assigned primary responsibility for the activities.
Item 4:
Detailed instructions and operating procedures are currently being prepared. The task will be completed within 60 days.
Item 5: Training and periodic retraining in the DOT and NRC regulatory requirements will only be required for two key individuals; the Reactor Health Physic.ist and the Central Region Health Physicist.
Individual users are required to comply with the Survey's Radiation Protection Procedures relating to waste disposal. A record will be maintained of training dates, attendees, and the subject material for future inspections by NRC personnel.
Item 6: Training and periodic retraining for employees who operate the processes which generate waste has been an integral part of the management program in the past and continues at this time. Training courses are generally conducted by the Survey's Continuing Education Group in cooper-ation with the Central Region Health Physicist.
Records of subject matter and attendees are available for inspection by the NRC.
