SUMMARY
OF OCTOBER 22, 2019, CLOSED PRE-SUBMITTAL MEETING WITH FRAMATOME INC. REGARDING GALILEO IN LOSS-OF-COOLANT ACCIDENT METHODOLOGIES On October 22, 2019, a closed pre-submittal meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and Framatome Inc. (Framatome). During the meeting Framatome informed the NRC staff of its plans to submit a Topical Report (TR) that will extend the use of the GALILEO fuel performance code to multiple loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) scenarios.
Framatome discussed how the GALILEO code will be added to S-RELAP5, how it will be included in realistic large-break LOCA and small-break LOCA evaluation models, the types of nuclear power plants the methodology would apply to, and how the methodology supports Framtomes advanced fuel management objectives (increase enrichment and burnup, chromia-doped fuel, and chromium coated cladding). GALILEO is intended to be an upgraded replacement for the currently used COPERNIC and RODEX2 fuel performance codes.
Framatome intends to replace the current methods with one code that has improved functionality. Framatome informed the NRC staff of the timeframe for submittal and requested that the TR review be completed in one year.
