Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Docket No. 50-219 IE Bulletin No.79-03A The purpose of this letter is to respond to the directives set forth in IE Bulletin No.79-03A which is concerned with longitudinal weld defects in ASME SA-312 Type 304 stainless steel pipe.
We have completed a review of the existing documentation and have concluded that there is no fusion welded stainless stcc1 pipe installed in any of the safety related systems at the Oyster Creek Station.
The above conclusion is supported by the fact that the Architect-Engineer (Burns and Roe Incorporated) specification for safety related stainless steel piping called for ASE A312 seamless.
It should be noted that some dis-crepancies were originally discovered in pipe certification and/or markings, which lead to a stainless steel piping investigation.
The results of the investigation are documented in Amendment No. 53, dated June 12, 1969, of the Oyster Creek Facility Description and Safety Analysis Report. The investigation concluded that specific piping was supplied as welded pipe with filler material in lieu of seamless pipe as specified by the A-E.
However, this type of pipe is not a concern of the subject bulletin. A review of plant modifications since initial start-up, also indicates that no fusion welded stainless steel pipe has been utilized.
