The infor=ation presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:
UPDATE - RESUMPTION OF CURRENTLY HALTED CONSTRUCTION AT THE SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT, DOCKET No. 50-498; 50-499 By letter dated October 17, 1980, Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P) has requested additional Itaited restart of AWS safety-related welding. The request is specific to performing Category I (AWS DI.1) structural steel welding submitted in a work plan developed for the fourth quarter 1980. The specific work plan covers the welding of structural steel for embeds up to and including 1-1/2 inch thickness in the fabrication shop. All other structural steel welding will be restricted to a thickness not to exceed 3/4 inch.
Based on review of completed corrective action in accordance with the response to the Show Cause Order, the continuation of production of AWS welding is being allowed, on a limited basis, as requested by HL&P.
A press release is planned by NRC.
Site construction progress is currently reported as 56% for Unit 1 and 20% for Unit 2.
