1 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATIN: Document Control Desk Washington, D. C.
20555 n
Gentlemen:
Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant
'Ihermal Stresses in Piping Connected to Reactor Coolant Systems - NRC Bulletin No. 88-08 i-L NRC Bulletin No.-88-08 and supplements 1, 2'and 3 (issued June 22, 1988, June 11 24, 1988, August 4,~1988 and April 11, 1989, respectively) outlined actions for l
licensees regarding thermal stresses in piping connected to reactor coolant systems. By letters dated July 28, 1988 and June 8, 1989, Alabama Power
-Company responded to Bulletin No. 88-08 and Supplements 1, 2 and 3.
These responses stated.that' actions would be complete for Farley Nuclear Plant Unit 1 by the end of the next refueling outage. Alabama Power Company has recently completed the ninth refueling outage for Unit.1, and the results of NRC Bulletin ~88-08 Actions 2 and 3 are hereby reported.
In-response to Action 2, Alabama Power Conpany performed ultrasonic E
examinations on the Unit I hot and cold leg safety injection' lines, normal and j.
alternate charging lines, pressuriser auxiliary spray-line, and RCS.to RHR j
~
suction lines. Based on the results of these examinations, it was determined L
that there were no reportable indications. These examinations were performed l-using the enhanced ultrasonic examination techniques and procedures described L
in Supplement 2.
In addition, our response of July 28, 1988 stated that one L
weld on the "C" loop hot leg safety injection line could not be examined due to L
an' interference with a pipe support. During the ninth refueling outage, ultrasonic examinations were performed on the subject weld and no reportable indications were revealed.
In response to Action 3, Alabama Power Company installed RT7's on all Unit 1 ll 1.
hot and cold leg safety injection lines, normal and alternate charging lines, pressurizer auxiliary spray line, and RCS to RHR suction ' lines. The installed RTD's will be monitored during the current operating cycle for evidence of thermal cycling. The decision regarding permanent installation of the RTD monitoring system has been deferred until the end of the next Unit i refueling outage, which is presently scheduled for March 1991.
