SUBJECT:
Waterford 3 SES Docket No. 50-382 IE Bulletin 79-03A Longitudinal Weld Defects in ASME SA-312, Type 304 Stainless Steel Pipe
Dear Mr. Seyfrit:
We have reviewed the subject IE Bulletin concerning the possibility of existence of undetected longitudinal weld defects in ASME SA-312 Type 304 Stainless Steel Pipe.
LP&L investigated this matter and determined that our Waterford 3 SES project site has purchased 100 feet - 10 inches (5 - 20 ft. random length pieces) of 10 inch Sch 40, SA-312, Type 304 welded pipe from SWEPC0 Tube Corporation.
The status of this material is:
A.
98 feet - 4 3/4 inches - not installed, stock material on HOLD in Ebasco storage.
B.
13% inches - installed as part of piping shown on IC-24 (4305-3 R13) and subsequently removed.
C.
6 inches - installed as part of piping shown on IC-24 (4305-3 R13) and subsequently removed.
D.
Ik inches - consumed making 5 cuts.
E.
9 inches - discarded by Tompkins-Beckwith after making some practice welds.
The two pieces, B and C above, were installed in the Containment Spray System (Safety Class 2, in RAB).
The problem was discussed at length with our A/E and on their recommendations these two pieces were removed.

cr Mr. Karl-.V. Seyfrit LPL 14720 Page.2 Our~A/E does not recommend using this material because of potential cracking at the weld because of centerline lack of weld penetration (CLP).
- We have, therefore, initiated efforts to' remove the remaining materials from the site and instructed that no welded SA-312, Type 304 materials be used at Waterford 3 SES project.
If you have any questions on the above, please contact us.
Yours very truly, D. L. Aswell-DLA:IH:sg cc: Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
