REVIEU OF PRESSURIZATION ANALYSES FCR PRESSURIZER SI'BC0",PARTiiENT -

BYRON /BRAIDWOOD STATIONS An acceptance review question in the enclosure to our letter of October 28, 1978, to Comonwealth Edison Company requested the applicant to perfom a subcmpartment, f

multi-node pressure response analysis (Item 022.3) including consideration of spatial pressure variation circumferentially, axially and radially within the co part:.ient.

The purpose of this memorandum is to note that the subcor.partruent in the Byron /Braidwood design for the pressurizer may be unique relative to the typical axisymatic arrangement of a cylindrical pressure vessel within a cylindrical subcmpartment. The pressuizer subcompartment cross section is that of an irregular pentagon. The pressuizer is located close to the two sides that form an acute angle. Thus, a pipe break within the volume fomed by those tuo walls and the pressurizer would release mass and energy uithin a volume that is a relatively snall fraction of the total subempartment volume, and because of the proxicity of the pressurizer to these two ualls, ficu to the larger volume uculd tend to be severely restricted.

l Because of this geometry and a lack of clarity of the arplicant's responses to date, it appears that the staff's continuing review needs to be focused on assuring that restricted volumes do not result in unacceptably big palpressures, yn8V i
