GP&L Carolina Power & Ugnt Comoany September 2, 1980 FILE: NG-3514(B)

SERIAL: NO-80-1273 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation gl ATTENTION:

Mr. T. A. Ippolito, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. '20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 MARK I CONTAINMENT PROGRAM Lear Mr. Ippolito:

This letter is to update recent correspondence and telephone calls among Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L), General Electric (GE), and NRC concerning scheduling of Mark I Containment Program modifications for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP) Unit Nos. 1 and 2.

Attached to this letter is a copy of CP&L's outage schedule for completion of these modifications.

This attachment refleets scheduled completion of the Brunswick Unit 1 modifications during the outage presently set to conclude in May,1982 (Reload No.3).

These modifications include T-quenchers, vent header deflectors, and any ninor modifications that may result. from completion of the Plant Unique Analysis (PUA).

PUA is scheduled to be completed in June,1981 for both units.

For Brunswick Unit 2, the attachment reflects completion of T-quencher and vent heade; deflector modifications during the Spring,1980 refueling outage while any minor modifications that result from PUA are scheduled to be completed during the outage presently set to conclude in February, 1982 (Reload No. 4).

Please consider this revised schedule when formulating any confirmatory letters to plants concerning schedules for Mark I modificationc. We prefer that the confirmatory letters be prepared in terms of the completion of a certain refueling outage rather than a fixed date. This would eliminate future re-negotiations since outage dates may change due to forced outages, system load conditions, and other circumstances.

Should it become necessary to further revise the attached schedule, we will notify you promptly.

Yours very truly, k.
