Dear Mr. Kammerer:
Enclosed is a copy of a letter I recently received from one of my constitutents, Mr. Charles A. Wildermuth, whose letter is self-explanatory. I respectfully request that you review his letter and advise me of the possibility of favorable action in this area so that I might fully respond to his concerns. With kindest regards, Sincerely, A GUS YATRON Member of Congress GY:rn i i 8008140 8/d
1J .V.;,,,*-{. c s .r ,. f.s ~.... b P. O. Box h26 Fleetwood, Pennsylvania 19522 May 6, 1980 tr. John F." Ahearne, Chair =an Nuclear Regulatory Co= mission Washington, D.C. 20555 De'ar Mr. Ahearne: When is the IGC going to take a positive stani on the Three Mile Island issue? Hasn't enough time lapsed for a government al appointed office to make a decision. based on what must be millions of reports, studies, surveys, and whatever other resources the bureaucratic red-tape machine can crank out? How many studies, how much more money, how much repetitive searching vill be done before you per=it 'IMI to open again? Is the main purpose of the NRC the creation of job security for an unlimited army of researchers on their payroll? j In all the reports frcm the IGC over the past year, I have yet to see any cention of the safety and efficiency record Gf TMI Unit I. You do study f upon study with an endless barrage of facts and figures to accompany them. What will the final results be? Are you trying to discourage the future of nuclear pover? It vould definitely appear so. I am in favor of nuclear power, and re-starting TMI Unit I. I have seen the results and abilities of the IGC and other govern = ental agencies in my observations at Three Mile Island. I was not then, nor em I nov, very impressed with their performance. Political pressures, the groups of a handful of radicals screaming their docesday messages.and politicians The news trying to make headlines have clouded the issues and the facts. l =edia with their irresponsible, unreliable sensationalism and ignorant report-I ing of untruths and half-truths have made the situation vorse. Isn't it time you people take a stand? Will you vait until the economy of this state is in shanbles? Will you vait until the future of nuclear power is dead? That is a grave consequence in light of our crisis with the Arab g t oil producing nations. The resolution of these issues may depend on you. g To date, I have spent twenty-six weeks at TMI doing deconta=ination vork 6 l l l in Unit II. I was there for the big push starting in June of 1979 until the 3 present time. The observations, facts, incidents, and knowledge I gained I have working there vill re=ain, stored in my mind and on paper, forever. observed this co=edy of errors, personally. 4 7 gooq 0 2.10 29

1. J~** f t e. ~ 1 Mr. John F. Ahearne Page 2 May 6, 1980 't If the nuclear industry fails it vill be due, at least in part, to your indecision and lack of positive action. When the day comes and this country is raped by the Arab nations and big oil interests, the fault may very well .l be y,ours. i ~ ~ Yours truly, d. Charles A.
