Dear Mr. Keppler:

On June 19, 1980, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc., (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10CFR 50.55(e). The same item was also reported by Westinghouse under 10CFR 21 (see letter no. NS-TMA-2264, dated June 18, 1980, to the Director, Office of Inspection and Enforcement).

Westinghouse identified intermittent contact operation as a problem occuring in their Type W-2 switch. This switch is used in certain safeguards systems on most Westinghouse plants and the reported problem affects the automatic actuation function of the witch.

Westinghouse is presently studying the intermittent contact operation of Type W-2 switches and will provide their findings to utility l

owners as they become available. PSI will then consider these findings and determine what corrective action, if any, is necesury.

This letter is intended to fulfill the requirements of an interim report l

as defined in 10CFR 50.55(e). A final report will be submitted on or before November 21, 1980. If you have any quescions on this report, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

.. W. Shields TDG/cg JUL 2 31980 C
