Dear-Bob:
The USGS has reviewed R. MeMullen's. response to question 9, At omic Safety and Licensing Appeal Board (ALAB-598), Decision, June 21, 1980.
Mr. McMullen's co:mnents accurately reflect the present 11SGS position.
The geology and seismology report s which the USGS reviewed for 1he Point Conception 1.NG Site do include data not on record for the liiablo Canyon Nuclear Power St'ation because the LNG review was undertaken after transmittal to the NRC of our Diablo Canyon posit ion, dated April 29, 1976. Ilowever, no data in the LNG repor s provide a basis for the !!SGS to change our position regarding the Diablo Canyon Nucicar Station as stated in our transmittal to NRC, dated April 29, 1976.
Even though the I.NG reports provide additional data there still remain ambiguitics in the location of the November 4, 1927, cart hquake. These anbiguities require the conserratire assumption that all candidate faults, such as the 1:osgri and 1.capoc faults, be considered as struct ures on which the carthquake could be located.
This represent s no change in our position and Mr. McMnllen has correctly paraphrased t hat posit ion in his response to AL\\it question 9.
Sincerely yours,
'.Ar,
