v DUKE POWER COMPANY MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION Report Number: SD 370/80-07 Report Date: August'4,'1980 Facility: McGuire Nuclear Station Unit 2 Identification of Deficiency: Hydrogen Purge System Valve Misapplication Description of Deficiency:
The following deficiency was reported via telecon by W. H. Bradley and J. K. Berry to Mr. John Rausch of the NRC in Atlanta on July 3, 1980. When requisitioning a 1/2" diaphragm valve.from the Construction warehouse, it was-discovered that a Duke Class E (ANSI B31.1) valve had been erroneously assigned to an application requiring a Duke Class B (ASME III, Class) valve.
This Class E valve was not installed.
Analysis of Safety Implication:
Valve 2VE12 is used as a test line drain between containment isolation valves 2VE10A and 2VE11 on the Hydrogen Purge Valve System. Valve 2VE12 is located in the containment annulus area. A potential failure of valve 2VE12 coincident with failure of the inside containment isolation valve 2VEll or piping between isolation valves would provide a leak path for containment environment to-the
. atmosphere.
Corrective Action:
A qualified Duke Class 3 valve has been selected and installed for this application.
