Dear Mr. Arnold:

We have reviewed your letter (TLL 316) dated July 2, 1980, subject as above and our comment: are noted below.

In general, we do not believe, as you indicated that the letter or the attachments supply much of the information that was requested in our letter TMI-80-087 dated May 15, 1980.

Attachments 1, 2 and 3 are updated information similar to already received data and are helpful to provide current performance. Attachment 4 is Met-Edison's preliminary evaluation of the performance of the resins and liners under postulated conditions and does not provide any of the specific information on the resins requested in our May 15 letter.

In fact, this c

attachment talks vaguely of " postulated worst case conditions" and "several years" of safe retention without defining either terminology.

In order for the staff to understand the Met-Edison evaluation, we need to know the specifics of the " postulated worst case conditions" and the detailed pro-jection of duration of "several years" of safe retention.

Some of the information that we requested is contained in the remaining attachments as noted below.

Attachments 5 and 6 are reduced size prints of drawings of the 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 liners respectively.

The reduced size drawings are illegible and should be replaced with full size drawings. 'In addition, it should be indicated whether the drawings were the ones actual'.y used for fabrication purposes and the internals should also be included.

Attachments 7a and 7b contain the alternative painting specifications for' the liner internal surfaces.

Please advise which coating material was actually applied to the liners.

Attachments 8 and 9 contain summaries of radioactivity loadings of the various liners and are another presentation of data in Attachment 3.

Attachments 10 through 12 show the physical arrangement used for surveying.the radioactivity in the liners and two typical liner surveys. However, these surveys do not indicate whether the distribution of radioactivity 'was related to layering the ion exchange media, were expected distributions of uniform media or reflect other conditions.

Mr.N.C. Arnold July 18, 1980 In addition, it is my understanding that you will be furnishing full size liner fabrication drawings along with general arrangement drawings of the staging / storage module for EPICOR II liners.

We appreciate receipt of your. preliminary evaluation report on EPICOR II liners and resins.

Please advise when the final evaluation and the detail information on resins will be forwarded.

Sincerely, h
