DUKE POWER COMPANY MCCUIRE NUCLEAR STATION Report No: SD-369/80-09, 370/80-08 Report Date: July 25, 1980 Facility: McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Identification of Deficiency: Diesel Generator Instrument Air System Solenoid Valve Deficiency Description of Deficiency:

On June 27, 1980, Duke Power personnel J. R. Wells, R. E. Miller, and J. K. Berry reported by telephone to Mr. John Rausch of the NRC, Atlanta, the folicwing deficiency.

After completion of 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
Engineered Safety Features (ESF) testing operation of Diesel Generator IB, the diesel was shutdown.and immediately a blackout restart was initiated. Shortly thereafter, the diesel generator instrument air pressure was observed to be lower than the normal 125 psig. Source of problem was determined to be a leaking vent solenoid valve IVGSV5173-B which had not closed as 1. should on restart signal due to insufficient coil " pull in" strength after prolonged service.

Analysis of Safety Implication:

All safety related applications for these Valcor valves have been evaluated.

Four of these valves are used in each diesel generator instrument air system.

Potential failure of these valves could preclude proper operation of the diesel generator.

Corrective Action:

Valve deficiency will be corrected by Valcor by-modifying valve stroke and/or replacing existing solenoid coils with stronger coils.

These modifications will be completed on Unit l'by September 2, 1980 and on Unit 2 by January 1, 1981.
