Third Contract Year Indroduction The companies under investigation this quarter are:
American Airlines Freight System Emery Air Freight Federal Express Northwest Orient Airlines Republic Airlines Sajen Air Trans World Airlines Zantop International Airlines, Inc.

Table I lists the field investigations made this quarter.
Althcugh DBM Courier Corporation terminated cooperation with the study last quarter, the company is included in the list of companies under investigation.
No terminal surveys have been performed at DBM since January, but the company's vans are routinely encountered at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. A First Flight Freight Service truck was encountered and surveyed, which placed the company on the list for this quarter.
Unless another truck is surveyed, the company will not remain listed. '

and V show the results of airplane and van surveys, respectively.

Tables VI, VII, and VIII include data from Thermcluminescent Dosimeters (TLD).
Exposure data are used to project exposure above background for the 92-day quarter.
l Tables IX, X, XI, and XII list radioactive materials shipments reported through Michigan State Police to the Division of Radiological Health.
Wipe tests made this quarter have revealed no contamination above the limits in 49 CFR.
All results indicate nondetectable or minimal removable contamination.
Airlines and Air Freight at Detroit Metropolitan Airport As noted in previous quarters, American Airlines currently carries the majority of Radioactive Material (RAM) packages that are carried by scheduled passenger flights.
Mediphysics and Mallinckrodt are the two most comon shippers. Mediphysics ships almost exclusively I-123, which has a 13.3 hour3.472222e-5 days <br />8.333333e-4 hours <br />4.960317e-6 weeks <br />1.1415e-6 months <br /> half life.
Almost all of these packages are below the label Transport Index (T.I.) presumably because of the short half life. Mallinckrodt packages generally exceed the label T.I.
Only two Mallinckrodt packages were examined this quarter.
One was the Yellow III in Table III with a listed T.I. of 1.0 and a measured T.I. of 2.5.
The other was a Yellow III package with label T.I. of 0.7 and a sneasured T.I. of 2.2.
Although only two packages were monitored, this data suggests that the previously observed pattern of consistent mislabeling may be continuing.
TLD data in Table VI indicate an elevated radiation level near the RAM storage area but no significant personnel exposure.
As in past quarters the mechanized freight handling minimizes contact time and thereby exposurd.
Emery Air Freight-had no record of any RAM packages handled when last checked.
Periodic contact will be maintained.
Federal Express handles small packages of RAM periodically.
None were observed this quarter, but the area monitors near the RAM storage area indicate a slight increase in radiation level.
As indicated in Table VII no significant personnel exposures have been recorded this quarter.
Northwest Orient Airlines continues to carry RAM.
Only " limited quantity" packages have been observed there this quarter.
No surface radiation was detectable on any of these packages.
Republic Airlines carries small amounts of RAM Yom New England Nuclear, generally on Thursdays.
However, one shipment of 21 White I packages was oisserved on a Monday and were found to contain tritium (H-3).
Radiation exposure to Republic Airlines workers appears to be minimal due to the small quantities of materials handled.

Sajen Air planes surveyed are listed in Table IV.
At the request of New England. Nuclear, some estimate of exposure to ground crew was made on two flights using time motion studies and will be made when possible in the future.
On the first of these two, the radiation field at the beginning of refueling was 0.4 mrem /hr at the fill cap on the wing.
Refueling took 4 minutes during which time the field-decreased as the plane was being unloaded. The dose was, therefore, less than 0.03 mrem. The second flight carried several generators in the nose c:mpartment and had field strengths of 2.6 End 2.4 mrem /hr at the fill caps.
A longer ' exposure time of 7 minutes was also involved, making the upper bound on the refueler's radiation dose 0.3 mrem.
Even though this is 10 times the estimate from the other flight, it is not excessive. Also, exposure is distributed over several workers, since several different refuelers work during any given week.
Trans World Airlines has not restored the late night St. Louis flight and therefore still carries no RAM.
Contact will be maintained to detect any changes.
Air Freicht at Willow Run Airport Six packages of Br-82 labeled motor oil were examined at Zantop Airlines at Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti.
Four of these were each 10 T. I., and two were 6 T. I. and 5 T. I.
All packages were measured below the label T.I.
The four 10 T.I. packages were under 7 mrem /hr i
at three feet, and the two lower T.I. packages were 0.4 mrem /hr and 0.8 mrem /hr below what each was labeled, respectively.
The 6 T.I.
package measured 220 mrem /hr at the surface, e: ceeding. the 200 mrem /hr limit.
This measurement was made on the bottom of the' package, which was raised by fork lift to allow access to the bottom. All other measurements were within regulatory limits.
A shipment of two 10 T.I. packages was examined at the Zantop dock while inside a truck operated by First Flight Freight Service.
Three placards were taped to the truck box, but the front placard had blown away.
The radiation level in the driver's seat was 6.9 mrem /hr (over the 2.0 mrem /hr limit) because the driver had placed the packages

against the front wall and on the passenger side.
As a demonstration, the driver was asked to move the packages all the way to the rear of the box and leave them for a radiation measurement.
This second measurement was 0.9 mrem /hr.
Comparison of these measurements was used to instruct the driver in proper loading technique.
Courier Companies As shown in Table VII three Casperson Inc. employees received radiation doses that exceed 125 mrem / quarter (that is one fourth of the annual 500 mrem limit), and two have exceeded 500 mrem in this quarter.
Similar past doses were called to the company's attention.
In response a larger truck was purchased to reduce radiation levels by providing greater separation distances.
This truck may ruult in a dose reduction to Drivers 1, 2, and 8 by next quarter.
Further negotiations are planned with the company to reduce the radiation dose received by the other drivers.
As mentioned, DBM Courier has formally tenninated cooperation with the study..DBM probably still carries the most RAM in the State.
Nevertheless, some coperation is still elicited from the drivers.
Several trucks were surveyed as listed in Table V.
All of the three vans that had radiation levels measured in the cab excceded the 2.0 mrem /hr limit, and two of the four vans exceeded the 50 T.I.
per vehicle limit. Substantial radiation exposure to the driver is likely, and the company should be encouraged to participate in the program.
Nuclear Power Plant Shipments Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant made one waste shipment this quarter.
Investigation of it coulu not be scheduled due to conflict with Division of Radiological Health emergency planning / response activities.
- Also, just over one hour of shipment prenotification was provided by the plant, which is a four hour drive away.
This second problem has been discussed with a power company official, who is reportedly investigating the matter.
Waste shipments from Donald C. Cook Nuclear Power Plants are listed in Table X.
Three of the shipments were investigated and found to be in compliance with regulations.
Palisades Nuclear Power Plant waste shipments are listed in Table XI.
Only one shipment investigation could be scheduled around other Division priorities. Upon the Department physicist's arrival at the plant, it was discovered that the truck had left the previous day with no ur ' ate in prenotification. Assurances were received that there wi i be no recurrences of this problem.
Yellowcake Shipments Uranium ore mined near Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada is partially refined into concentrate (yellowcake) and shipped through Michigan to Metropolis, Illinois. Table XII is a list of these shipments.
Notification of these is given to the Mi_higan State Police when the trucks cross the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie.
A quarterly confirmation of scipments is made by phone with the Mackinaw Bridge Authority.
No tricks were stopped for investigation this quarter.
