Dear Mr. Groce:

On June 5,1980 the National Marine Fisheries Service telephoned the NRC and informed us that a large specimen of Acispenser brevirostrum, the shortnose sturgeon, a federally recognized endangered species, was taken from the intake structure at the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station on June 2, 1980. The~ report-was verified and we established that the speci-men had been delivered to the State of Maine Department of Marine Resources.

On June 13, 1980 a shortnose sturgeon was again found at the intake structure.

We request that you prepare formal responses to the enclosed questions con-cerning the particulars of the incidents. We would like to discuss draft responses to the questions during the forthcoming informational visit on July 15, 1980. We request formal responses to the questions within 20 days after the visit.

Enclosure Ques'tions Per tair.ing To The Specimen Of Acipenser brevirostrum Obtained at the Maine Yankee Station Response to this set of questions can either be in the form of a narrative or question by question responses, provided all information requested is included in the response.

1.

Indicate the time, location, condition, and manner of collection of the specimen. Particular attention should be directed towards describing how and v.here the speciman was collected and the condition of the specimen.

2.

Indicate the position and qualifications of the individual who provided the description of the specimen and indicate how soon after collection his observations were made.

3.

Provide a description of the conditions under which the specimen was kept

'from the time of collection to the time it was delivered to the state.

5.

Pcovide the name, title, affiliation, and telephone number of the indivi-dual in the state of Maine Department of Marine Resources that will provide the pathologist report.

If known, provide the date when this report will be available.

Provide any historical records of shortnose sturgecn either taken at the station or collected during monitoring programs.

Provide an estimate of anticipated frequency of collection of this species.
