INTERIM 50:55e REPORT ON COMPONENT CCOLING WATER PUMP DEFICIEHCIES DESCRIP'"20N OF TEE DEFICIENCY After hydrostatic testing of the first two of five component cooling vater pump casings, for the Midland Project, Eabcock and Vilcox (B&W) Canada Ltd.
personnel detected a slight drng when the shaft of one of the pumps was
-rotated and the other pump van difficult to turn by hand.
Subsequent investigation by E&W Canada Ltd. personnel revealed that the pu=p casings had been rermanently deformed during hydrostatic pressure testing. See the attached sketch for information as to the nature and extent of the deformation.
Upon review of the design records associated with the pump casings (Pump Model #8X10X17 PRI) it was found that the defor=ation was caused by e. basic design error in that the suction nozcle end loadin'g due to hydrostatic pressure test was overlooked in the design of the casting.
It was also found that B&W Canada has tuccessfully used this model pump vith the associated casing castings for other non-pover plant applications, but ?.he design pressure was always lover than the 175 psig design pressure for this application.
Section 9.6 of the Midland PSAR describes the component cooling vater system.
AHALYSIS OF SAFETY IMPLICATIONS AND CORRECTIVE ACTION As of this date, the analysis of the safety implications of the deficiency and the determination of corrective action to be taken are not complete.
It' is expected that this information vill be available prior to April,1977 i
