Dear Dr. Knuth:

i This letter is submitted as an Interim Report regarding the deficiency l

in the seismic qualification of the control rod drive control system AC l

trip breaker cabinets for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station Unit 1.

As previously discussed with Mr. J. Sutton, NRC-DRO Region III inspector, i

the matter is viewed as a significant deficiency pursuant to 10CFR550.55(e).

A reevaluatien of the ceimic ge:,lificeren of the AC hren'm enhimon has found that the attachment of(the cab nets to the floor is inadequate to withstand the SSE acceleration levels. An analysis is presently i

being undertaken to redesign the mounting of the cabinets.

A definitive report of the deficiency, analysis of the salety implications, i

and the corrective action taken will be submitted to your office in accordance with 10CFR550.55(e) upon completion of our study of this problem.
