Dear Mr. Gismbusso:
Duke Power Company is filing herewith Amendment No. 36 to its Application for Licenses for the Oconee Nuclear Station which is under construction pursuant to provisional construction permits CPPR-34 and -35.
The purpose of Anendment No. 36 is to provide, in response to additional questicns by your staff, the following financial information which is submitted to supplement and revise the financial information presented in Amendment 35.
1.
The source of funds for the estimated annual cost per unit of opera-ting Oconee Unit 2 and Oconee Unit 3 for a five-year period will be obtained from the electrical operating revenues derived from system-wide operation.
2.
The estimated cost of decommissioning both units and maintaining them
)
in a safe, shutdown condition if and when it becomes necessary to do so is $5,000,000. This estimate is based on the following:
a.
Removing the nuclear fuel and shipping it to a reprocessing
- facility, b.
Removal of the control rod assemblies from the site.
c.
Flushing and draining of_ process systems and the resulting radio-active wastes will be packaged and shipped to a storage facility.
d.
All radioactive wastes capable of being packaged and shipped would be removed from the site and sent to an approved storage facility.
e.
Sealing of buildings and portions of buildings conteining activated process piping by means of locked door., welded plates over openings, etc.

The funds will be obtained from the electrical operating revenues derived from system-wide operation.

The estimated cost to maintain both units in a safe, shutdown condition is $77,000 per year. This estimate is based on a round-the-clock surveillance by security guard, radiological monitoring of the plant exterior and environs, maintenance to insure integrity on the de-commissioned plant and normal site care. These funds would be derived from the electrical operating revenues derived from system-wide operation.
As required by Section 2.101 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this Amendment 36 is being served on Mr. Reese A. Hubbard, County Supervisor of Oconee County, South Carolina, the county in which the facility is located.
