1 J. M. Hendrie, Deputy Director for Technical Review Directorate of Licensing TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE REQUEST POR REVIEW OF PROPOSED REPAIR PROCEDURES FOR B&W CONTROL ROD DRIVE MOTOR TUBE DISCONTINUITIES 1
Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) informed the AEC at a May 11, 1972 seating in Bethesda that many of the control rod drive (CRD) motor tubes on all plants having B&W NSSS are suspect of containing hot tears on the inside tube surface. B&W is currently assessing the need for repair or replacement of some of these CRD assemblies. They tentatively proposed several methods for repairing these CRD motor tubes some of which would involve exemptions from ASME code requirements. Other possibilities are to lower the design requirements for these motor tubes or present a fracture mechanics analysis to show the acceptability of the existing motor tubes with these discontinuities. motor tubes is requested.
In this regard, it is also requested that the Mechanical Engineering Sranch be represented at the June 6, 1972 meeting in Lancaster, Ohio at Diamond Power's CRD canufacturing facility.
