MEETING WITH BABCOCK AND WILCOX COMPANY CONTAINMENT RESPONSES ANALYSIS November 3, 1972

SUMMARY

This meeting ^(generic) was held at B&W's request in order for B&W to get a better understanding of the containment design criteria which would meet AEC approval.

The heart of the problem lies in the fast that primary system response to th:-

e LOCA which is conservative for ECCS analysis is nonconservative for containment

' response and vice versa.

Depending upon the assumptions made with regard to mixing of superheat steam through the steam generator with saturated liquid backing up the cold leg to the lower SG plenum, the B&W analysis can yield a relatively wide range of peak containment pressures.

This was a short meeting (1 hr. 15 min.) and so no conclusion were reached.

It was agreed that further technical discussions sid warranted and will be

~

held in the near future.
