FIRE PROTECTION REM EW, OCONEE RADUASTE AREAS i
The Environmental Evaluation Branch has reviewed the attached Table, i
" Analysis of Radiological Consequences of Fires in Radwaste Areas " which j
was submitted by Duke Power as part of their fire protection safety review i
for Oconee.
I In a conference call with your staff and the licensee, we were informed that the likelihood of a fire occurring in areas identified in the attached
{
table as Room Hos. 51,106,122,124 and 166 which contain liquid waste is i
small. As for Room No. 304, " tow Level Drunning Storage Area," we were in-formed that only one unfilled drum will be left uncovered and susceptible to fire. The amount of radioactivity that may be released in case of fire i
in that area is, therefore, small. We were also informed that there is j
fire detection provision in that area. The measured dose rate in that area is small (2-20 mr/hr) allowing ample time for fire fighters to enter and
]
combat any combustion.
Based on the abr~e, the attached analysis to the fire protection provisions of the radwaste areas of Oconee are adequate provided that the amount of undrumed icw level waste in the druming storage area and other creas is restricted by procedures to small quantities.
We also understand that there is an established radiation protection proce-dure for fire fighters, including respirators available for fire fighters to reduce inhalation dose.
