1.0 INTRODUCTION
Cct.eric Letter 83-2P was issue.d by the NRC or July 6,1983 to indicatt actions to be taler ty licensees and applicants bastd on the generic irplications of the Saler ATWS events.
Item 2.2.1 of that letter states i
tttt licensees and applicants stt11 cescribe in considerable detail their program for classifying all safety-related components other than reactcr trip system (RTS) components as safety related cn plant documents and in information tandling systems that are used to control plert activities i
that may affect these corponents.
Specifically, tM licensee / applicant's subrittel was required to contain information describing (1) the criteria used to identify these cernonents as safety-related; (2) the inforration f
hardling system which identifies the components as safety-related; (3) the n.anner in which station persenr.el use this information herd 11rg system to i
cor. trol activities affecting these components; (4) management controls that are used to verify that the information handling systt;m is prepared, reintaine6, validated, and used in accordance with approved procedures;
)
and (5) design verification and qualification testing requirements that i
are part of the specifications for procurement of safety-related corponents.
[
The licensee for Cooper submitted responses to Generic Letter 83-E,
item 2.2.1 in subtrittels dated November 4,1983 and December 28, 1988.
We have evaluated these responses and find them to be acceptable.
l 2.0 DISCUSSION AND EVALUATION l
The licensee provided submittels that describe programs to assure that all components necessary for accomplishing the required safety-related functions are properly designated on plant documents, procedures, and in I
the inforraation handling system that are used to control plant activities that may affect these components. A description cf the criteria used for cittsifying con.ponents and equiprent as safety-related and a description of the preparation, reintenance, control and use of the inferration i
hand 11rg system which contains the classification information were also t

In addition, nanager.ent controls used by the litersee assure that the infornation hanoling system will be consistent, adequately prepared and maintained, and will be used as intt.r.ded. Furthernore, the i
licensee assures that appropriate design verificatic.7 and 4t,tlification 7
is trecified for the procurement of safety.related components and parts.
Detailed evaluation of this it m is documented in the attached contractor's technic 61evaluetionreport(TEP) EGG.NTA-7254.
3.0 CONCLUSION
The steff ar.d tur contractor havr reviewed the liter see's restenses to Generic Letter 83-28 Iten. 2.2.1 regarding the equipn.ent cletsification progren fer seftty.related corrponents anc conclutt that they ere acceptable.
