FAILURE OF'HPCI TURBINE DUE 10 HIGH MOISTURE IN LUBE 01L Enclosed is my Technical Review report on the failure of the HPCI turbine at Susquehanna 2 which occurred on January 27, 1988. The turbine failure was due f

to high moisture in the lube oil. The report indicates that contamination of L,

. lube oil by steam leakage past the turbine shaft seals can be detected by p

routine visual inspection and routine sampling such that the moisture accumula-F tion in the. lube oil can be stopped before it reaches the intolerable level.

l We believe that the safety inplications of such event are minor and the

' possibility of occurrence of such an event is infrequent.
