Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Containment Gas Monitor-ing System.

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On June. 23, 1980, Mr. H.A. Walker of Detroit Edison's Quality Assurance Department, telephoned Mr. Van Dell of NRC-Region III to report that we had received notification from Comsip, Inc., the Supplier of the Fermi 2 Con-tainment Gas Monitoring System, that they had reported problems to NRC-Rcgion V under 10CFR21 requirements. It was reported that a pump malfunc-tion during a test at Comsip on a similar system had created excessive pressure which could conceivably rupture the diaphram, and breach the con-tainment integrity of the system.

The correspondence from Comsip, Inc. stated that a kit vill be made avail-able to add a by-pass on the discharge of the pump to prevent deadheading, which will eliminate excessive pressure and the possibility of this type of failure or damage. This kit and associated documentation have been requested by Detroit Edison.

A final report on this item is scheduled to be submitted to you before October 23, 1S80. If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor - Construction Quality Assurance.

Sincerely, W.J. Fahrner, Manager Enrico Fermi 2 WJF/ HAW /pn cc:
