,' _D SUPPLDEUAL INFORMATION FOR LER NP-33-78-38

( )

,, e DATE OF EVENT: May 9, 19 78 FACILITY: Davis-Besse Unit 1 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE: Diesel Generator 1-1 declared inoperable on May 9, 1978.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence: The unit was in Mode 6, with Power (}%T) = 0, and Load (Mh'E) = 0.

Descriution of occurrence: At 1745 hours0.0202 days
0.485 hours
0.00289 weeks
6.639725e-4 months
on May 9,1978, while perfor=ing Surveil-lance Test ST 5081.02, " Diesel Generator Refueling Surveillance Test", the genera-tor load would not stay constant and the diesel generator air intake low pressure alarm was received. The test was suspended at this point, and the diesel generator declared inoperable.

This occurrence did not place the unit in the Action Statenent of the Technical Specification 3.8.1.2 because the plant Was in Mode 6 which requires only one diesel generator to be operable while in Modes 5 and 6.

\

' Designation of Accarent Cause of Occurrence: The cause of this occurrence is not known.

Analysis of Occurrence:

There was no danger to the health and safety of the public or to unit personnel. The diesel generator was not required for energency power during the period of ti=e it was inoperable. Diesel Generator 1-2 yas operable had e=ergency power been required.

Corrective Action: Under Maintenance Work Order IC-322-78, Diesel Generator 1-1 Air Intake Lov Pressure Switch was checked for calibration and operation. It was found satis %ctory. Under Maintenance Work Orders 78-1184 and 78-1192 unit per-sonnel worken with Woodvard field service engineers to assure proper governor operation. Maintenance Work Order 78-1209 was issued to check Diesel Generator 1-1 intake air pressure, all inlet pipe joints for leakage, oil bath filter for blockage and found none.

At 0415 hours0.0048 days
0.115 hours
6.861772e-4 weeks
1.579075e-4 months
on 167 14, 1978, Surveillance Test ST 5081.01, " Diesel Generator Monthly Test" was cc=pleted, and the diesel generator was declared operable.

vailure Data: There have been no previous failures of the Diesel Generators used by load fluctuations.
