bulletin at McGuire Nuclear Station. The results of our recently

. Unit 1 i

'.No-Anchor' Darling Model S350W swing check valves are installed on McGuire j

Unit.1.. Additionally,-none of those valves are in our warehouse stock.

There are eight (8) valves installed in McGuire Unit 1 that are similar in design to the Anchor Darling Model S350W. These' valves were manufactured 1

- lines. These valves were installed.by recent Nuclear Station L

Modification, m

. We do not plan to inspect these valves daring the next refueling outage.

These fasteners were evaluated in detail during valve design. The i

fasteners '.iere specified to have hardness valves less than those discussed

_l in bulletin 89-02.

The manufacturer has provided material certificatior.,

including hardness teuting results from the fastener supplier.

In addition, thene Type 410 Fastenern are not torqued up to a high stress levn1. indicating there is lesa ousceptability for stress corrosion l

., A itgr 2 October 31, 1989 Unit 2 No Anchor Darling Model S350W swing check valves are installed on McGuire Unit 2.

As mentioned above, there are none of these valves in our warehouse stock.

No valves of similar design (to the Anchor Darling Model S350W) as discussed in Bulletin 89-02 are installed in Unit 2.

There are eight (8)

Atwood & Morrill spare valves in our warehouse stock intended for future installation on Unit 2.

The hardness condicion of the fasteners for these F

valves is the same as described above for Unit 1.

The next refueling outage for McGuire Unit 1 is currently scheduled to i

begin in late March 1990. Consequently, if there are any NRC concerns I

about the status of Bulletin 89-02 discussed above, please let us know prior to December 31, 1989. For outage planning purposes, this amount of lead time will be required for any possibic inspection activities. As mentioned above, we do not feel inspections of the eight identified valves are warranted.

If desired, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss this with the NRC technical staff at the earliest possible date.
