Subject:

Braidwood Station - Units 1 and 2 Additional Response to IE Inspection Report Nos. 50-456/79-15 and 50-457/79-15 NRC Docket Nos. 50-456 and 50-457 References (a): January 18, 1980 letter from G. Fiorelli to

Dear Mr. Keppler:

Reference (a) contained an inspection report prepared by Mr. E. R.

Station, Schweibinz of your office of activities at Braidwood lhat report identified an apparent item of noncompliance with NRC requirements. The item involved a lack of review of the storage conditions necessary to prevent significant deterioration of quality during the extended construction delay in progress at Braidwood Station.

Reference (b) contained Coamonwealth Edison Company's response that item of noncompliance.

Reference (c) clarified that April 30, 1980 was the date when full compliance would be achieved with regard to Commonwealth Edison's response of Reference (b).

Shortly after March 1, 1980, Commonwealth Edison resumed construction activities at Braidwood Station, thus obviating the immediate need for review and implementation of vendor long-term storage recommendations during an extended construction delay.

Although construction has resumed, Commonwealth Edison intends to gik 8006 090dpfp]7

. Commonwe:lth Edison Mr. James G. Keppler, Director Way 8, 1980 Page 2 continue the review and implementation. However, the; scope has been modified as follows:

1) All vendor long-term storage recommendations will be filed for future reference, i.e. any future extended construction delay; and
2) All vendor long-term storage recommendations will be reviewed to determine those recommendations that can be incorporated into current Braidwond procedures for storing equipment during construction to prevent sign!ficant deterioration of quality.

This modified scope was discussed in a May 1, 1980 telephone conversation between Mr. E. R. Schweibinz of your office and Dr. W.

F. Naughton of this office.

Currently, the vendor long-term storage recommendations have been gathered and filed at Braidwood Station. Braidwood personnel are currently reviewing these recommendations for their applicability to current Braidwood procedures for storing equipment during construction. Commonwealth Edison estimates that this review and incorporation of appropriate recommendations will now be completed by June 30, 1980.

Please address any questions that you have concerning this matter to this office.

Very truly yours, D. L. Peop s Director of Nuclear Licensing 3667A i
