SUBJECT:

UNDERCLAD CRACKIrlG IN REACTOR VESSEL f.iOZZLE (LASALLE COUNTY STATION, UtlITS 1 AND 2)

Recently Sequoyah 1, Watts Bar 2 Salem 2, and North Anna 1 perfomed augmented ultrasonic inspections of their reactor vessel nozzles. These examinations I

were conducted (1) determine if underclad cracks, resulting from certain pre-and post-cla ea,t treatments used by some Eumoean fabricators, were present in + _

zzles, and (2)~ to demonstrate that cLdding heat treatments used IGhe United States did not result in the type of underclad cracks recently found by a European fabricator. The results from the ultrasonic examinations, however, did not indicate an explicit correlation between obs1rved cracking and pre-and cost-clad heat treatment.

To better define the potential for cracking in reactor vessel nozzles, we reouest that you provide us with the following infomation regarding each of the LaSalle reactor vessels:

Nozzle base metal materia'. specification type an'd grade.

Clad process type, electrode size and number of clad layers.

Heat input (amps, volts, speed) for each clad layer.

Clad pre-and post-heat temperature and interoass temoerature for each clad layer.

Vessel stress relief treatment.

Manufacturer or subcontractor who fabricated vessel and aoolied nozzle cladding.

Please inform us after receipt of this letter of the date vs.u can sucoly the reouestad information.

Sincerely, ORIGitlAL SICt!ED BT
