Mr. H. P. Lyle Vice President - Electric Production and Engineering 5265 Hohman Avenue Hamond, Indiana 46325
Dear Mr. Lyle:
SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGAR0!NG'THE PROPOSED BAILLY PILE FOUNDATION In var continuing review of your March 1978 proposal to install shorter piles for the Bailly foundation, we have identified a need for additional infonnation. This question is enclosed and relates to your calculations of pile group uplift capacity.
The nuntering system follows that initiated in our letter of May 16, 1980.
Since we used a similar system in our request for additional information in our letter dated June 22, 1978, respond in a manner which clearly identifies whether the 1978 series or the 1980 series is being addressed.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, contact the Project Manager for Bailly, M. D. Lynch, at (301) 492-8413.

362.30 We transmitted a question (Iter 362.1) to you in cur letter dated June 22, 1978, requesting additional information regarding pile group capacity; you responded to this matter in your letter dated July 14, 1978. In reviewing Figure 362.1-4 of your July 1978 response, we note that you assume a soil density of 130 pounds per cubic foot in your analysis of the capability of a pile group to resist uplift. This soil density appears to be a total soil unit weight. However, when construction dewatering operations are stopped, the ground water level will rise above the tops of the piles, thereby totally submerging the soil resisting uplif t.
Accordingly, provide justification for using the total unit weight of the soil rather than the submerged unit weight when calculating the weight of soil resisting uplift. Provide the mininom factors of safety for pile group uplif t using the submerged unit weight of soil. Revise your July 1978 response to our Item 362.1 of 1978 as required. State the minimum length of pile embedment to achieve the required factors of safety for pile group uplif t.
Indicate how your pile placement criteria will achieve this minimum pile embedment length.
