ORIGIN OF INSTRUCTION TO ISOLATE LETDOWN AND INCREASE MAKEUP AFTER A REACTOR TRIP l m. i....,.....,..........,. 4
.....w.....i,.
Today I conferred with Messrs.
D.F.
- Hallman, J.A. Lind and J.F. Walters about the origin of the common instruction to plant operators that after a reactor trip has occurred, they are to terminate the letdown flowrate and increase the makeup flowrate to reduce the amount of decrease in pressurizer level.
Though Mr. Walters was closely related to the development and usage of the original reactor trip procedure, I learned that Mr. Phil Griffith, previously with B&W Training, but presently employed by Florida Power Corporation, was visiting B&W today.
He told me that he was the preparer of the original operator's procedure for reactor trip used at the first B&W plant to startup and personally talked to B&W engineers about a recommended procedure to follow.
He said there was no documentation prepared concerning these recommendations at the time the first procedure was written (about 1969).
Since then, subsequent procedures have used the original Oconee plant procedure as a model.
Included is a copy of a more recent version of the Oconee reactor trip procedure which is basically like the original procedure used as the example for the preparation of reactor trip procedures at all of the other operating plants.
