NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION n.l" E

WASHINGTON D. C. 20555 o

%,.....f Docket tio. 50-320 6 1980 The Honorable' William Goodlino United States Hcuse of R epresentatives Washington, D. C.

20515

Dear Congressman Gcodling:

I am writing in response to your note of April 17, 1980, that references a telephone call on March 24, 1980, from your constituent, Mr. Harold Donley.

Mr. Donley was concerned that he had received conflicting information about 1

whether or not Unit 2 of Three Mile Island was in a cold shutdown condition.

I Dr. Bernard Snyder, Director of the Three Mile Island, Unit 2 Program Office, called Mr. Donley on April 25 to inform him that TMI-2 is indeed safely shut-down and that its condition is being ronitored continuously.

fiRC's primary cbjective with respect to TMI-2 is that it be cleaned up expeditiously with minimal risk to public health and safety.

We regret that this misunderstanding arose over the plant's condition.

Dr. Snyder's call has clarified this crucial issue for Mr. Conley.

Sincerely,

~/5ibetf)T. A.Rehm i

William J. Dircks, Acting Executive Director for Operations
