g NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION g

E WASHINGTON, D C. 20555 p'

May 9,1980 Docket No. 50-285 Mr. W. C. Jones Division Manager, Production Operations Omaha Public Power District-1623 Harney Street Omaha, Nebraska 68102

Dear Mr. Jones:

The NRC staff has completed the review of your June 14, and August 29, 1979 submittals concerning the radiation doses at the Fort Calhoun Station, Unit 1 equipment hatch. Based on our review of your surveys and analyses we have concluded that the existing shielding is adequate and that our evaluation of this subject is completed.

The NRC's concern of the radiation levels outside of the equipment hatch were instigated by an Office of Inspection and Enforcement (0IE) inspection conducted from December 1 to 3, 1976, as documented in 0IE Report No. 50-285/

76-16. This report found the Fort Calhoun Station to be deficient, and assigned Deviation No. 7616/1, because the concrete shield wall shown in FSAR Figure 11.2-2 outside of the equipment hatch had never been installed.

OPPD responded to this report by latter dated January 17, 1977 in which the conclusion was stated that the removable concrete shield was not required since its installation would not significantly increase the current margins of radiological safety.

The NRC concurs with this conclusion and recommends no further action on this issue.

Sincerely,

'[/
