WR 17 1909 Docket No. 50-29 Yankee Atomic Electric Company ATTN: Mr. James A. Kay Senior Engineer - Licensing 25 Research Drive Westborough, Massachusetts 01581 Gentlemen:

Yankee Atomic Electric Company has notified the NRC staff of the removal of the No.1 discs from the Low Pressure Turbine at your Yankee-Rowe facility as a result of a major failure.

In our conversations with members of your staff and Westinghouse concerning the problems, we indicated our desire to obtain representative sections of the ruptured discs for an independent metallurgical analysis by our consultant at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

This letter is to formally request that you make such samples available for our use. To assure sufficient material for evaluation, the samples shall consist of a four-inch wide cross-section of the entire disc and contain a fracture face of a major fragment from each of the first stage discs.

It is requested that all reasonable precautions be exercised to avoid contamination in preparing, packaging and shipping the two samples to the following address:

Dr. John Weeks Department of Applied Science Building 703 Brookhaven National Laboratory Associate Universities Inc.

Uptown, New York 11973 The cost of shipment of the samples is to be billed to the above address.

If you have any questions concerning this request, please contact W. J.

Collins, Inspection and Enforcement (301-492-8180).

Sincerely,
