NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 6

WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555

%;%...../

April 24, 1980 Docket No. 50-70 l

Mr. R. W. Darmitzel, Manager Irradiation Processing Product Section Vallecitos Nuclear Center P.'0. Box 460 Pleasanton, California 94566

Dear Mr. Darmitzel:

By letter dated Janaury 5,1978, you submitted six black and white 8"X10" photographs of foundations and foundation wall exposures taken during construction at the Vallecitos Nuclear Center.

Five of them show the GETR reactor building foundation excavation and one (Wl) shows an office build-ing foundation excavation. This photographic evidence of the nature of near surface geology and geologic structure in the area of the reactor foundation is especially important in light of the probabilistic studies and requires further analysis by persons familiar with the site trenching recently performed. Therefore, you are requested to provide the information identified in the enclosure as soon as possible.

Sincerely, 4

ll-f

Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #4 Division of Operating Reactors

E.1closuro REQUEST FOR I?; FORMATION l.

The photographs appear to be of sufficient quality and contrast to enable an analysis of some aspect of the geology and/or geologic structure under (around) GETR.

k' hat determinations can be cade about the geology and geologic structure under (around) GETR as shown in these photographs?. _.

2.

Please address the significance of the determinations of geology and structu're.made from analysis of the photos as they may bear on:

(1) geologic assumptions made in the " Additional Probability Analysis" of March 12,1980 and (2) the geologic description or characterization of the GETR site as presented in your Geologic Investigation reports, such as the ESA, February 1979, Phase II report.

3.

If possible, please correlate the geologic features and structures shown in the photos (such as strike and dip) with those in the trenches which have been photographed logged and analyzed in the Phase II Geologic Investigation report (ESA, February 1979).

4.

If a correlation is made, then the age of soil under (around) GETR and possibly the attitude of the stratigrapnic units and geologic structures under (around) GETR can be inferred, What is the significance of the correlation of stratigraphic units and/or structures on (1) the geologic assumptions made in the " Additional Probability Analysis" and on (2) the geologic description or characterization of the GETR site (ESA, February,1979)?'

5.

Please indicate by means of overlays those places in the excavations that may be referred to specifically in your discussion for items 1

nrough 4 above.

5.

Please furnish (1) five high cuality 8"X10" sets of the 6 referenced chotos made from the negatives; (2) any other existing photos of the GETR foundation excavation and (3) copies made in color if any such negatives exist in color.
