Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 11 e
101 Marietta Street, Suite 3100 rN-Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Re: RII:JP0 Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
In response to your letter of February 6, 1980, which transmitted IE Bulletin 80-03, we wish to advise that a review of the charcoal absorber designs for the Catawba Nuclear Station has been conducted.
All charcoal absorber units, except the Containment Cleanup Units, are different designs than those described in IE Bulletin 80-03.
Therefore, an inspection of these units was not required.
The Containment Cleanup Units utilize tray-type charcoal absorbers which are the type described in the Bulletin. An inspection of five of the charcoal cells was performed by the manufacturer, Farr Company.
These cells were fabricated using their standard spot welded con-struction (135 inches match center-to-center) not rivets as noted in the Bulletin. There was no sign of sagging perforated screens or any other defect that would permit the leakage of charcoal from the cells.
Ver truly yours, (f.
