Mr. William J. Scanlon Special Joint-Conunittee on Nuclear Energy House of Representatives Room 419 State Capitol Lansing, Michigan 48901
Dear Mr. Scanlon:
This is a partial response to your February 4 request for documents.
Your name has been added to distribution lists for copies of documents routinely distributed to agencies in the Executive Branch of State government in Michigan.
If you can identify the NRC documonts you want, t
which have been sent to those agencies in the past, I will (btain copies for you.
The coninunications you requested in items 1 and 2, page 2 are enclosed.
With respect to materials licenses, due to the volume of licensing actions and related correspondence, it is n3t feasible to add your name to all correspondence. Nor would NRC be able to determine precisely what licensing actions would in some general way impact the State of Michigan.
The Materials Licensing 3 ranch, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards provides copies of all licenses issued to appli-cants in Michigan to the Division of Radiological Health, Michigan Public Health Department.
I suggest that you contact them.
In order to comply with item 1, page 3, the documents you want would have to be identified in a very specific manner, as opposed to the all i
encompassing request. With respect to item 2, I am enclosing a list of licensees authorized to pick up radioactive waste from licensed facilities in the United States.
Currently the NRC, Di' vision of Waste Management has received no applications for either a low-level waste disposal facility or a high-level waste i
repository in Michigan or elsewhere.
If an application is submitted, you will be notified. The mining of uranium is not within NRC's regulatory purview.
It is within the purview of the State.
At present, NRC is not aware of any such actions in Michigan.
I Most of the information you are requesting is already in Michigan.
I urge you to contact the Executive Agencies and request copies of the documents. I'm also enclosing a list of the public document rooms in Michigan where all correspondence and documents related to licensing actions in Michigan are placed.

MAR 171980 W. Scanlon I still owe you a response to item 1, page 1; and item 1, page 2.
Sincerely,
(
