p March 12,1980 Docket No. 50-309 Mr. Robert H. Groce Senior Engineer - Licensing Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company 25 Research Drive Westboro, Massachusetts 01581

Dear Mr. Groce:

In regard to our review of the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station feed-water piping system response to water hammer, we have found that acceptable precautions are being taken to minimize the occurrence of this event in your feedwater system. The basis for our conclusions are provided in the enclosed Safety Evaluation Report.

While we consider this review complete, we may reexamine the issue in the future, if incidents of water hanner should occur in your feedwater piping system.

Sincerely, s

obert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #4 Division of Operating Reactors
