Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Units I and II (TMI-1 and TMI-2)
Operating License Nos. DPR-50 and DPR-73 Docket Nos. 50-289 and 50-320 Concern for Voiding During Transients on B & W Plants In our letter TLL 057 dated February 15, 1980, we requested an extension for responding to your January 9, 1980 letter. The requested extension date was March 1, 1980. This letter is intended to satisfy that commitment.
B & W has analyzed a number of operating transihnts and published the results in a report. This report entitled " Potential Reactor System Voiding During Anticipated Transients" is attached. On the bases of their analyses, B & W concludes that voiding does not occur in the reactor coolant system during anticipated operational occurrences.
We have reviewed the B & W report and also looked at the results of some in-house calculations. We concur with B & W's conclusion that voiding does not occur in the primary system for this class of transients when RC pressure is greater than 1600 lbs.
