Sampling Summary for April 4-5 m
Operation Ivory Purpose Environmental Protection Agency April 6, 1979 All 31 of the samples of airborne particulates and gaseous radio-dine collected on filters and charcoal cartridges on April 4-5 and the five samples not included in, yesterday's summary were analyzed by gamma spectrometry. All samples had gamma spectra whi'ch were negligible for reactor-related radioactivity, except for the* samples collected at Station 13 on April 3-4 and Station 29 on April 4-5.
These samples had traces of 133Xe which could not be quantitated.
d Several " grab" samples of air collected on the ground and in the air by aircraft were collected and analyzed for tritium and radioactive noble gases. The results of the samples are as follows:

Air Sampling Summary for' April 5-6 Operation Ivory Purpose Environmental Protection Agency April 7, 1979 From Gamma Spectrometry analyses on air fi'lters and charcoal cartridges collected at all 31 stations of the air sampling network during April 5-6, 1979, reactor-related radioactivity sas detected at Stations 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 133 21, and 25.
Only trace quadtities of Xe was detected on the charcoal cartridges at Stations 5, 10, and 21.
The other stations had the following concentrations of 131, which were used to postulate the radiation dose to 1
otet infant receptor breathing air *ith the observed radiciodine concentrations.

Air Sampling
,' i,
As shown by the cumulative" listing of air resnits, the only reactor-Q..
related radioactivity cbserved on the particle filters and charcoal j'
cartridges collected from the 31 network stations during the period April 133, y,,
6.-7 tas at Stations 11,16, an( 29.
Only trace quantities of 7
^ ~ '
observed in the sampics from Stations 16 and 29.
The sample from Station 13II concentration of 0.21 1 0.10 pCi/m3, which converted to an 11 had a estimated infant thyroid dose of 0.0010 mrad.
Two samples of air for noble gas analysis were collected; however, the results are not available at this time.
Water Sampling Ch Thirteen water samples were collected around the four different outfalls No radiciodine above the of THI,'and analyzed by gamme spectrometry.
minimum detectable concentration oflSO pCi/1 was measured. Concentrations Xe' (12001540 pCi/1 and 51001620 pCi/1) were respectively measured of 133 in water samples c611ected at a location 30 yd. upstream of Outfall 001 (4/4/79, 1630 houuQ and at Outfall Marker 112 (4/4/49,1640 houn).
fO Ninety-nine samples of' river water and sediment were collected near the Columbus Bridge and Dam by USGS during the period March 30, 1979 to s
April 3, 1979. All samples were shipped to the EPA Las Vegas laboratory 1
for gamma spectrometry analysis.
i A total of 141 water samples were collected by State of Pennsylvania personnel from drinking water supplies in the area and mailed to the EPA Montgomery, Alabama laboratory for gamma spectrometry analysis and gross beta radioactivity analysis.
The analysis on all priority 1 and 2 samples indicated that the
'33I concentrations and gross beta radioactivity concentrations were<25 pCi/1 l
and4 5 pCi/1, respectively. The results on the priority 3 samples are not available at the present time.
l Milk Sampling Beginning April 6, milk samples were collected from eight dairies within anJ-mile radius of IMI and one near Hershey, Pa. All samples were
! ; ' '1.
shipped to[ EPA Las Vegas laboratory for gamma spectrometry analysis.
Daily samples of milk will be collected from thier.locationsuntil reactor J
cool-down.
Gamma Exposure Monitoring
\\
.b[~~'/
A review of gamma rate recender charts for the period April 7-8 indicated that the gamma exposure rates at 31 of the 35 monitoring locations y
were at background levels. The chart,s for two stations were not available j
at the present. time, bne unit failed, and the chart for one recorder 7
I indicated an above background reading for the period 0220-0320~ hours on April 8.

I Water Sampling On2 hundred five of 138 samples collected on 4/4/79 from public drinking water supplies within 25 miles of Three Mile Island have been j
analyzed with no radioactive material above background dectected.
The minimum detectable activity is defined as 18 pCi/1 for I-131 and 3 pCi/1 for gross beta activity.
USGS/ EPA water sampling from the Susquehana River has been discon-tinued. Municipal supplies for Columbia, Wrightsville, and Lancaster will be sampled daily and mailed to Las Vegas for analysis. Three Mile Island discharge water will continue to be sampled and gammo counted in Harrisburg.
